Calling All Artists! (20.II.488)

Post by Nymphetamine »

Her Grace, Isabelle Auxerre, Sithire of Transdariania and Floxod of Nixke Nelki seeks to commission an official portrait for the Castle Black archives.

All aspiring artists are asked to submit two selections of their best work. One piece must be a portrait, in colour, of a humanoid subject in the traditional mediums. The other piece might be whatever the artists wishes.

All works will be exhibited at Castle Black, and opened to the public before Her Grace makes final selection.

The selected artist will receive 1,000 crown in advance payment, plus an additional 3,500 crown on the completion of the final portrait. All materials and a studio (if necessary) will be furnished.

((OOC: Please submit your character's full name, and two basic descriptions of art work to be exhibited on this thread. Submissions close Friday, March 9th, at midnight PST.))

The first artwork submitted is a black and white (lead and charcoal) drawing of Isabelle and her husband, as he goes off to war. It shows Isabelle's back as she had stepped away to watch a man lead his horse through the columns out onto the road. It is a beautiful somber moment, the depth of the drawing touches upon the realism of the moment, including things such as light, color, form, perspective and composition.

The second artwork is a portrait of the Korthai Aldenaxk on his ship leaning against the rail. It is a warm sunny day in Drache, the shades of his red hair, and clothing are brightened by the back drop of the sea. The smile on his face and stance clearly capture Aldenaxk's carefree attitude. He holds a bottle of rum in his hand. This portrait is done via an pigmented oil sticks. The portrait is a gift for his girlfriend Aine and hasn't been seen by either of them.

((Oil sticks are richly pigmented oil combined with wax and made with natural colors that gives them the same fluidity, subtlety and durability of traditional oil colors. They have just enough natural wax added to maintain a solid stick form (kinda like lipstick). Traditionally used with knives and thin sticks to paint with instead of a brush during that time period.))

Tobin the Artist submits the following two portraits:

City of Broken Elves #1: a solid lightweight wooden slab instead of a canvas. It shows a portrait of a young elf girl, most of whose bones were broken and healed up incorrectly, leaving her disfigured. The look on her face: sweet and optimistic seems to suggest that she still considers her becoming a celebrated dancer a possibility, while her body says that she'd be lucky to use the bathroom without overwhelming pain.

The old injuries are done with grotesque naturalism and the cold, pale colors along with the dark background, make the whole thing stark and unpleasant. One wants to linger on her face but the composition keeps trying to guide the eye away towards the deformities. The background is a surreal mishmash of an inn commons and some nightmare city made of injured body parts and jagged tools devouring the beauty like a mechanized abbatoir and grinding it up into ugliness.

Untitled: a large canvas showing a woman with small bare feet walking away from the viewer, up a cliffside path with hills in the distance. A simple black dress without a trace of mourning emphasizes the whiteness of her bare neck and arms. A thick bun of bronze hair covers the back of her neck. The picture's supernatural veracity goes beyond the bounds of the human. She looks like a live woman standing before the viewer, in the void of distant prospect. Any moment, she could turn and back over her shoulder. The woman's pose, slightly drawn back left hand, the fleeting exertion of her neck in turning and other traits grips the viewer with the expectation of a miracle.

And the miracle will come to pass, but different viewers will see it very differently based on their psyche.

Scenario 1: More light than darkness: The summer light intensifies, haloing the muse with divine fire. She turns around at last. The woman's face contains the sum of the feminine caress and heartfelt longing. The fire of youth shines in the tenderly resolute eyes. There is dust on her legs; the individual little hairs curled behind her ear catch the sunlight. Her noble mouth exudes love and intelligence. She stands half-turned but revealing her entire face, which sparkles with the strength of life and a joy as disturbing as sleep filled with passionate tears.

Scenario 2: More darkness than light: The glow of summer turns cold and false. The woman stands before the viewer in the same pose, with her head turned, but her face is unaccountably transformed, despite being the same to the last detail. The mocking eyes meet the viewer's with an evil and base expression, lips prepared to bestow a loathsome smile of madness. Her beauty becomes repulsive, exuding a greedy fire capable of consuming a person. A reptile's lust and a demon's passion light up the vile oval of her face, containing all the evils of addiction, obsession and ruin.
