All Glory to the New Sithire!

Post by Gudrun »

With the transition of power complete, Sithire Rumunire has announced a week-long festival to celebrate a new era in Transdariania. With less than a week to prepare, merchants, business owners, and entertainers have already started a mad scramble to have things ready by 27.X.489 (10/27). Attendants and workers can be seen coming and going from Castle Black as that will be the location of the masquerade ball. The eerie quiet that proceeded from the vampire's abdication of her seat seems to have ended.

This notice has been posted in all public venues, including outdoors and in establishments, in Transdariania:
Hear ye, hear ye!

Sithire Dolurn ul-Dorn Rumunire announces a week-long festival from 27.X.489 to 2.XI.489 (10/27-11/02) in Drache to celebrate his ascension to the highest seat in the duchy. Everyone is invited to partake in the merriment with food, beverage, and entertainment provided by the good graces of our new Sithire.

A special all day Masquerade will conclude the festival on 2.XI.489. It shall be held in Castle Black's Great Hall. All are welcome to attend, but formal costumes and masks are required for admittance.

May Menxvan grant our new Sithire the wisdom to lead us toward a brighter future!
Notices written on fine parchment and sealed with Sithire Rumunire’s official emblem are sent to all nobility in Transdariania. These letters contain the same basic information, but this is added at the end and is signed by the Sithire himself.
All Transdarianian nobles are required to attend the Masquerade as a show of support to Sithire Rumunire.

OOC Notes

Post by Gudrun »

The Festival will take place in the Main Setting from 10/27-11/02. Players may engage in festival rp at their leisure, but all festival rp must be concluded by the end of the week.

There will be opportunities for both play-by-post and session rp. Please keep track of timelines.

The Masquerade will be play-by-post in a separate, temporary Discord channel so people can engage according to their schedule. The last day to participate in the Masquerade is 11/02 at 11:59pm PST. After that, the channel will be closed, archived, and made available to read.

**Masquerade Etiquette**
  • All masquerade rp should happen in #masquerade-event on the Discord server (once the channel is open starting 10/27)
  • Players can use multiple characters during the masquerade.
  • Play-by-post means that responses won’t necessarily be rapid fire
  • Players who engage in session rp in Masquerade should be mindful of timeline linearity.
  • The rp for a single day is happening over the span of a week so others have an opportunity to engage in the event. If your character had a conversation with one character for the entire night of the masquerade during session rp, that same character could not engage in something else during that time in the Masquerade.

There’s been quite a lot of activity in the city since the announcement of a week long festival was made on such short notice. Many seamtresses were enlisted to help in making banners, bunting, and general decor to hang around the city. Carpenters were contracted to construct a small entertainment pavilion where live entertainment can perform in the Merchant District regardless of weather circumstances. Bakers, brewers, and other food vendors who received orders for both the masquerade at Castle Black and for general consumption placed orders for grains, meats, and vegetables that had to be fulfilled in quite a hurry. Entertainers galore were also being sought to cover a large swath of the city, not just the Merchant District.

While most activities are slated for the Merchants’ Square, this is going to be a near citywide event. The only district that seems like it’s being left out is the Wharf District, but even then there are those who are preparing unsanctioned parties or are simply taking advantage of the increase in hapless tourists.

A lot of money is being spent on this extravaganza. While plenty is going back into locals’ pockets, the expenses are surely draining coffers somewhere. The public ads about the festival claim it’s the Sithire’s “good graces” that are paying all these expenses. Surely a self-declared Man of Menxvan is also a man of his word. How many would question it if a tidy sum is slipped into their hands as payment for their services related to making sure this festival will be a success?

The Night Before

Post by Gudrun »

It seems like the city will never be one hundred percent ready for such a massive weeklong celebration, but what’s done by now will have to make do. Colorful bunting, banners, and streamers criss cross the streets overhead. Rumunire’s house crest, a stately oak tree set against a yellow-orange sun, is all over the place to remind everyone why this party is being thrown.

People had already started filing into the city from elsewhere on the eve before the festival. Lodgings throughout the city were at or near capacity. Farmers within close proximity of the city cooked up a grand idea to rent their now barren fields as space to set up tents. It’d soon be clear that inviting an entire duchy into Castle Black with the promise of free food and drink caused a massive pilgrimage. Provincials Guards and Aerial Defense Corps officers were summoned by the Lord Protector and Captain of the Guard to ensure things in and outside of the city remain peaceful while drunken revelry ramped up over the course of a week.

Day One

Post by Gudrun »

After much hubbub and hurrying, the first day of the festival arrives. Dracheans and tourists are awakened by the blaring of horns, jingling of bells, and songs of a chorus as a parade marches through the main thoroughfares of the city - aside from anywhere near the Wharf District. Banners flying the sigil of Rumunire wave in the cool air. Acrobats and jesters rile up a crowd that’s mildly disgruntled at such a joyous wake up call.

Food stalls and street vendors were set up the night before. Bright bunting and banners were hung around Merchants’ Square. An entertainment pavilion placed next to the fountain provides a constant stream of upbeat music from lutes, horns, and percussive instruments. Business and work still carries on for most. The majority of those revelling so early in the day are the well-to-do and tourists, which are groups with heavy overlaps based on the finery of their festive garments.

Most activity seems concentrated in the Merchant District, but elsewhere there are food and beverage stalls and little stages for entertainers to perform. For now, the flow of traffic into and out of the Wharf District isn’t curtailed, but there are more guards stationed at the gates to watch for suspicious activity.

Day Two

Post by Gudrun »

There have been long simmering tensions since the Vampire Sithire abdicated her seat. There were moments when it seemed the spark had finally ignited a fire, only for those trying to riot to instead put out their own flames. It may have been because they were waiting for a time when their accumulated anger would have the most impact as a mass movement. This weeklong festival is that moment apparently.

Anyone who knows anything about Drache would know that the people who live in the Back Alley are always suspect of wanting to riot at the drop of a hat. It’s why the Sithire and Captain of the Guard know to station more Civic Guards at the gates into and out of the Wharf District. This positioning is a catch-22 however, as it may have been done to stop riots from spreading into the other district but it also angered those who were seething with increasing anger. With the work day winding down for many, men and women milled about the streets in the Wharf District. Bootleg festivities in this area placate some, but not all.

Day Three

Post by Gudrun »

Tensions in the Wharf District flared up, which was totally expected. The extra guards at the gates were utilized to lock down the area, more or less, but traffic was still allowed through. Things just went at a snail’s pace as goods and workers tried to go about their daily business.

The festival itself was making money, as much as it may have been losing vast amounts as well. The Sithire paid for many of the food stalls, but that didn’t mean people couldn’t set up their own to sell food. Merchants also took advantage of the increased tourist traffic to hock festival souvenirs, such as tiny portraits of the new Sithire or wooden carvings in his likeness. People also took advantage of Dolurn’s known strong faith in Menxvan, with people advertising religious trinkets and charms with supposed blessings of luck and good fortune.

Many residents were already growing weary of the events. Every morning horns blared proceeded by the sound of music all over. Just getting around the city is more of a chore, since people were still just arriving and inundating the streets. Traffic is everywhere, and one had more luck traveling by foot than by horse or carriage. The BlkDragon and Merchant Districts were the most crowded and loudest areas. Inns and taverns are constantly filled with drunken revelers, so those places were not where one could find a moment’s peace.
