Wiki Extensions

Post by Nymphetamine »

I've uploaded our Parser Functions extension (which should hopefully not be retarded anymore about info boxes, etc) but who knows?

I've been looking up extensions that Wikipedia has installed and uses, and found a few useful ones.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ImageMap

This one was just now installed, for Amy, mostly. Haha.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SiteMetrics

Installed that one, as well. Because I love shit like that.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:EasyTimeline

This is one that I don't know if we'll ever use, but I can see us using it for some reason. The installation is a bit more complex, and I haven't done it. If you guys don't think it's necessary, I'll leave it off.

This was all in my search for a media player for midi files. Because a lot of the media players seem to be experimental or beta. I think we might have to convert the midi files to mp3s?

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extensio ... diaHandler might work, but it's still in beta development. I had a few others that I was looking at, but if I closed them, I must not have thought they were going to work out.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extensio ... wikiPlayer also might work. For non-commercial use, which is how we roll.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:InputBox

This one might be useful in the future, for navigational purposes and the like.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DynamicSidebar

This one could be useful for various levels of editors.

Still working on trying to embed midis into the wiki, but at least they can be uploaded at the moment.

When Pat Feaster wrote those MIDI files, as stated on his website they were made for FM synthesis and not wavetable/digital synthesis (as most cards use today). So what happens is some of the songs sound bloody awful because the instrument used doesn't sound right.

I started working on 'updating' some of these songs and changing the instruments using a Soundfont editor, then saving them as MP3s. I've only done one or two songs, but if you guys like I can convert some of them to MP3 so they'll sound better.

They'll still sound like something out of a SNES game when I'm done, but a whole lot better than the random drums and screeches that might come from using them as they currently are.

I only found the three midis that were linked on the old site. The link to Feaster's webpage when he was in school comes back with a 404 error. Unsurprising considering how long it's been. I didn't know anyone had copies of the other ones that were never hosted on the site.

I'm not sure how much effort you're putting into them, and how much they'll be used, but if you're bored or what have you, I wouldn't say no. The mp3 player plugins for MediaWiki seemed to be stable and easier to configure.

http://www.phonozoic.net/midi/midi.htm

His MIDI page and stuff is all still there. Just don't expect anything grandiose -- these MIDIs sound terrible on standard software wavtable.

I'm not looking at doing a whole lot of songs, but at least a nice sound of the anthem and a few other songs might be better than putting up some MIDIs that (in some examples) sound like a cat dying a slow and agonising death.

(Not that I could do any better, I haven't done musical composition since Year 10.)

Here's some examples of some of the MIDI files that have updated instruments to make them sound a bit nicer.

Feel free to add these to the WIki if desired..
