Gale 23.IV.489

Post by Gudrun »

From the Arangoth Weather Center: 4/23: Skies: violent storm. Temps: high-60s during the day, low-50s at night. Winds: SW 64-72mph.
Despite otherwise calm weather over night, the sky at dawn was a vibrant, foreboding red. Workers at the docks took heed and began securing ships and properties. Sailors were warned to not risk their lives by trying to protect their vessels and to seek shelter on land instead. An alarm rang out to warn the rest of the city of incoming inclement weather. If people took heed, there'd be enough time to prepare. Arangire Uzzo's new sea wall and stone clad piers were about to be put to the test as a gale-like storm swept in from the southwest later into the morning. Winds gradually picked up ahead of the storm, and sheets of lightning could be seen spreading through the tops of dark anvil head clouds looming over the southern horizon. This was definitely a freak storm considering the time of year, and it would seem wholly unnatural to some. However, there was nothing magical about it, and anyone trying to suss that out would come up empty. When the storm finally reached land, the first strong gusts dislodged unsecured items, broke tree branches, pushed over shallow-rooted trees, and tore some tiles off roofs. The prolonged pummeling from winds would increase such damage, with old wooden structures prone to the worst damage. Storm surge was diminished thanks to the new sea walls along the harbor, but a few waves crashed over and brought up to a foot of sea water a block inland. Heavy rains flooded the river and its banks. Over the course of the day even the sewers would be spitting up water as the rains overburdened their outflow capabilities. The constant lightning add more dangers as ground strikes were frequent. Ships' masts were prone to being struck, along with tall trees. Anyone wearing plate armor was in for a bad time.
People looking skyward during the storm would've seen multiple mysterious masses hurtling out of the storm clouds, towards the ground, and landing in random areas within Drache and its immediate vicinity.

Creatures that fell from the sky

Post by Gudrun »

Setting date 3.V.489:
One would rightfully wonder about whatever happened to the creatures that fell from the sky during the heavy storm now weeks passed. At least two creatures were killed in close proximity to the BlkDragon Inn during the storm. Others were easily felled by locals once uncovered while clean up was happening. The rest made a scattered pilgrimage northwest into the countryside. They spent the day roosting within thin strips of woods between farmlands, then culled livestock for food at night. This didn’t bode well for many, as they infiltrated barns and stables for their meals — only to be thwarted by farmers with pitchforks. Eventually a greatly reduced number of flying creatures congregated at the same point in the Transdariania countryside. There, a forest provided cover, a stream offered water, and surrounding farms contained livestock on which to feed. It was likely a matter of time before enough rumors of desiccated livestock started spreading through the area. Meanwhile, more of the same creatures still exist in Goat Island, but it seemed like a fair number had gotten swept up in the storm as reports of sightings decreased afterwards.
