Location

Inner Arangoth is the part of Arangoth right next to Song Deep (known in Arangothek as "Nelkedossath ul Leptat") and was the first region settled by Arangothians, or the "Goxal," their original name for themselves. The territory was known in olden times as "Leptatarna" or Song-land, and its ruler first took the title of Grand Duke.

Origins and History

Folvaholk the Great was the first Grand Duke of real importance; his father, Fenduth, was the first known to history by name. Folvaholk built roads connecting other Arangothian-inhabited areas to Leptatarna and subjected to his control the Dwarves of Ruthmarna, on whom he depended for metals. Folvaholk's son and successor Kukarek established good relations with the Khalar tribes to the north of Song Deep and put an end to their raids on Arangothian villages and towns.

Kukarek's grandson was Tagran. While he was Grand Duke, neighboring Grand Duchies began to respect him as an impartial intermediary and sought out his help in resolving disputes. Since his word passed for the ultimate authority, he was accepted as the first King of Arangoth and built a capital and palace on the shores of Song Deep. This city became known as Tagrana, named after its builder, and it was the capital of Arangoth until a little over fifty years ago when it was almost destroyed during the cataclysm that brought the end of the Old Kingdom. Arangothian years are still counted from the foundation of the city of Tagrana (470 years ago in the mun-year 2000).

During the fifty-years' interregnum, when there was no king or queen of Arangoth, Inner Arangoth experienced no major changes in its everyday life beyond the damage to Tagrana, which became an overgrown, dilapidated ruin. The region had always been a fairly peaceful and prosperous farming country, and the only effect of the end to centralized government was that a few wealthy merchants were able to buy up lots of land and curtail the traditional freedoms of the Arangothian peasant-farmer. Once King BLKDRAGON and Queen AngelSin appeared to the far south in Drache, these merchants eagerly submitted to the new royal authority, because this meant they would no longer have to hire guards to keep order out of their own pockets, and any royal taxes could be passed on directly to the peasantry.

After the return of Arlok ul-Dorn and his coronation as King of the north in 469, Hornath ul-Marfed became Arlok's capital. Reconstruction of Tagrana began in the year 470, and it once again became the capital of the northern regions of the kingdom in Hearthfire (September) of 472.

After the Crownlands defeat in the Arangothian Civil War of the Year 487, the duchy once again took up the namesake of Leptatarna, with Arduin ul-Marcion Tagran Aldenbar ascending to the title and holdings of Sithire, administered from the City of Tagrana. The former King Arlok and his family were forced to retire to their ancestral lands, under the custody of his son, Emereth ul-Arlok Tagran, and no longer play a part in the affairs of the duchy.

Other Notable Features

Besides Tagrana, this region contains the market city of Hornath ul-Marfed, which has been the largest city in Arangoth for hundreds of years.

Hornath ul-Marfed is famous for an annual fair dating back many centuries, which coincides with the annual meeting of the Northern Arangothian Estates, an ancient advisory and legislative body. This city was Folvaholk's capital, and it contains some of the oldest buildings in all Arangoth, including an intact 600-year-old castle. Hornath-ul-Marfed is connected to Drache by two roads: a precarious path through the mountains of Ruthmarna, and another through the Sresar Vale, which is longer but usually safer. Its principal inn is the Speckled Goose. The countryside is inhabited about equally by Humans and Elves, with some Dwarves in the south and some persons of Khalar ancestry in scattered communities known for horse-breeding. There is a large currant-growing region to the south of Hornath ul-Marfed, and currant pastries and currant wine are local delicacies. So are Tagrana Mushrooms, a particular variety found almost only in the ruins of the old city; consuming them is said to give a person temporary but unpredictable magical powers.
