Merchants' Festival

Merchants' Festival

All week event: Wednesday, July 10 through Wednesday, July 17
This is the traditional date for a major mercantile fair, but to avoid competition many towns now stagger their fairs and place them on different days. The customary taxes on the sale of certain goods are lifted on this day by long-standing tradition. On one of the hottest days of the year, merchants and consumers gather in normally crowded bazaars and boulevards to buy and sell wares. The Merchant Festivals is not only highlighted by the exotic wares for across the world, but the varied entertainers that fill the air with music and laughter as those with and without browse the booths.

This year the Merchants' Festival in Drache will last a whole week! Merchants' Square will be filled with music and dancing. Vendors will offer exotic wares, street foods, and plenty of booze.

Merchants will be able to import certain items tax free for the festival. This year's list of tax free items is: exotic herbs and spices, sugar, perfumes, coffee, art, porcelain, and linen.

Citizens and residents outside of the city can also enjoy the benefits of the festival, with towns hosting different events on different days.

[OOC note]
This is meant to be a chance for casual rp in Drache and the various cities and towns in Transdarianian. RP can be self-guided interactions between players and npcs. I (Gudrun) will be gming some posts to add flavor to interactions on July 12 and 13.

If you have any ideas for Merchants' Festival events, post them in #bdi*ops on IRC or #bdi-mods in our Discord server!

The Merchants’ Festival began this past Wednesday/Middas and is in full swing by Friday/Fredas. Merchants imported an overabundance of items listed this year: exotic herbs and spices, sugar, perfumes, coffee, art, porcelain, and linen. The tax-free part simply meant importation taxes were levied, but it meant that it would come at a cheaper cost to the consumer as well since supply of these items increased for this event. Commoners had a rare chance to purchase goods like linens, coffee, and sugar at a price more affordable to them. Porcelain items from the Sword Isles were a remarkable sight this year, as they brought some of their finest wares - usually reserved with the high caste nobility, to Drache. Of course, commoners were still priced out of such fineries, but it was nonetheless a rare chance to even see such things.

Festivities weren’t solely shopping related however, as the influx of people in the Merchant Square meant others were taking advantage of the bustling. Street performers and musicians filled the atmosphere with song, dance, and cheers. Street food vendors and purveyors of cheap booze kept people well fed and moderately drunk. An ice wizard has concocted strange desserts made from shaved ice, sometimes mixed with cream. Who would have thought that strawberries and peppercorns would be an enticing combination, but it was a popular request. His stall was always surrounded with people who marveled as they watched him create then shave blocks of ice, and lines to order a taste nearly went around the Merchant Square twice. Impulse buys were at an all time high too, and many uncouth vendors took advantage of that as well.
