Language of Aslar
This article covers the standard dialect of Aslar's official language (here referred to as Aslarian.
Aslarian Phonetics
The language has four vowels: A, I, O and U (in some dialects, E, I, Ö and Ü). It has the following consonants and semivowels: B, D, G, Z, L, R, P, T, K, S, J (dj), C (tch), H (kh), GH (voiced variant of H), ZH, SH, M, NG, TH (thick), DH (though), Y and ' (a glottal stop). The following consonant clusters appear within words but never at the beginning or end: PL, TL, KL, SL, CL, HL, SHL, THL; BR, DR, GR, ZR, JR, GHR, ZHR, DHR.
These rules are really only important if you want to make up your own words, but they also apply in interesting ways to how foreign place names enter the language.
Grammar of Aslarian
The language of Aslar is inflected, having several case endings. The language has a nominative-accusative alignment.
=Basic case endings for nouns
-t, -it = possessive (genitive case). 'Aslarit = of Aslar, Aslar's. 'Aluriyat = of Elluria.
-k, -ik = direct object (accusative case). I give the ball to the dog.
-sh, -ish = indirect object (dative case). I give the ball to the dog.
-ng, -ing = ablative case. I take the ball from the dog. 'Aslaring = from Aslar.
-m, -im = prepositional case. Used whenever a noun follows a preposition. For coming up with personal and place names, -t/-it and -ng/-ing are the most important of these endings. For last names, -tabus/-itabus is the equivalent of -son.
Adjectives
Adjectives precede nouns and take the regular ending -i (adverbs take the ending -iyi). So if you want to create a name for a person or place along the lines of "Tall Tower" or "Big Knife," simply run the two words together, with the -i in between. [Examples: Dhaslibijra (Old-father),Gangi'atha (Big-village), La'ibash (Bright-sword) etc.]
Nominalizing Adjectives
To turn an adjective into a noun (e.g. "the tall one," "the beautiful one") simply add the ending -l. [Examples: Detlil (the small one), Sighril (the young/new one).]
