This fungus is used as a supplement for the Vuulari people who spend most of if not all of their lives below the surface. Vuulari are able to travel above the ground but the sunlight hurts their skin and eyes. Because of the difference in nutrition, the problems that come from being unable to grow plant life below the earth, the Vuulari people have developed this blue glowing fungus as a dietary option.
Growth Cycle
Because there are no real seasons or changes in the climate beneath the earth, Uuthli Olva grows quickly and converts the compost on which is grows into nutrition for the spread, processing the waste material for food quickly. In a matter of weeks the fungus will spread through a pile of compost, devouring it and turning it into the deeply glowing blue food.
Mostly the fungus begins as spores, either placed in the compost by the Vuulari on purpose to grown there or naturally occurring with the presence of heat, moisture, and the necessary vitamin and mineral content in the compost.
Regional Information
This fungus grows in the Underdark, in the Vuulari cities beneath the ground. Because of the lack of light the plant has created its own artificial light and feeds itself off the product of its own glow as well as the minerals and vitamins found within the declining compost. Uuthli Olva needs no light source to survive so it is perfectly able to live in the black of this subterranean environment.
Cultivation
Because of its uses as a food supplement the Vuulari people cultivate this fungus as a means of feeding their people. It is not enough to provide all the nutritional requirements of the people, but it is able to transform the vitamins, nutrition of the composted matter and turn it into something that it can it, as a byproduct it becomes something that the Vuulari system finds nutritional and healthy.
Uses
Edible, nutritional supplement. This plant is not sent out of the Underdark, it is not sold to other peoples because of its uses to the Vuulari. Human and other races do not find the same kind of value out of the plant, it works with the biology of the Vuulari only.
